GENERAL DEFINITION:

This is skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level. A position in this class repairs, replaces, alters and redesigns equipment and piping systems for County facilities and buildings. Work also includes the incidental performance of work in related trades. A position in this class is differentiated from those in related classes by the incumbent's responsibility for the individual accomplishment of assigned work. A position in this class reports directly to a technical supervisory position.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)

  • Receives work and job orders for repair, installation or other maintenance work with plumbing fixtures and/or systems such as oxygen, steam, water, sewage and chemical treatment; inspects and studies building plans and drawings to identify work requirements and plans; prepares area for work, including opening partitions as necessary for access to affected area or fixture; makes repair or alteration, installing piping, pumps, valves, gauges and other system component parts; fixes parts in place by welding, brazing and burning joints; hooks up electrical and/or electronic equipment into systems; inspects finished job for conformance to requirements, codes and accepted trade standards.
  • Determines materials needed for jobs, checking against supplies; orders and receives supplies and equipment for each job; coordinates schedule for job performance, including the shutoff of water and other elements so provided, with other building personnel and those in affected area; keeps records of jobs performed, materials used and related information; reads and records metering systems, reporting water, sewage and chlorination levels to building or facility management personnel; works with contractors, inspectors and vendors to plan for and coordinate efforts in larger alteration or repair jobs; may instruct and oversee the work of other personnel providing assistance with jobs; may assist other trades personnel and/or perform such maintenance work.
  • Performs other work as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of plumbing principles, practices, methods and techniques commonly employed in the repair, alteration and installation of plumbing fixtures and systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, substances, and safety precautions of the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices addressed by, and general provisions of, plumbing, environmental, safety and other code requirements.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of plumbing tools and materials.
  • Ability to learn the specific codes and regulatory provisions governing plumbing work in the County.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and sketches.
    Ability to determine time, materials and equipment required to complete assigned jobs. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep records of activities.
  • Ability to lift, carry and maneuver into position: pipes, joints, and other such heavy and/or unwieldy fixtures.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to nursing facility patients, families and visitors, if required by work assignment.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
  • Three to four years plumbing work, one year which shall have been at the journeyman level.
  • Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited above.

Schedule:

Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Comments:

Must commute between multiple job sites.
