Summary

The Plumbing/Lining Helper is an entry-level role designed for individuals with limited or no plumbing experience who are beginning their career in the trades. Through the Bill Howe Helper Program-a structured, multi-department pre-apprenticeship track-Helpers receive hands-on exposure to various plumbing and lining disciplines while developing foundational technical, safety, and professional skills.

Helpers support technicians, foremen, and department leads on a variety of job sites and internal tasks, while progressing through rotational assignments that identify strengths, assess aptitude, and prepare them for long-term placement within the company.

Program Purpose

The Helper Program ensures new hires gain meaningful, realistic experience across multiple departments before committing to a career track. This structure allows the company to:

  • Develop a stronger, more skilled workforce
  • Reduce early-stage turnover
  • Set clear expectations
  • Identify the best long-term role for each candidate
  • Build a consistent pipeline of future apprentices and technicians

General Duties

  • Assist technicians with tools, materials, equipment preparation, and jobsite setup/cleanup.
  • Support rotational departments by completing assigned daily tasks.
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and company policies.
  • Maintain a positive, professional attitude when interacting with team members and customers.
  • Attend required training sessions, safety meetings, and development activities.
  • Perform basic maintenance or shop tasks when not assigned to a field department.

Physical Requirements

  • This role routinely uses construction equipment such as heavy machinery, hand and power tools.
  • While performing duties of the job the employee may work aloft, climb, bend, pull, reach overhead, stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license.
  • Must have a clean and insurable driving record, meeting company and insurance carrier requirements.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials or equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments, crawl spaces, attics, and uneven terrain.
  • Willingness to learn, take direction, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain proper PPE usage.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work well on a team.
  • No prior plumbing experience required; training is provided.

Environmental Conditions

  • Travel to a variety of worksites every day.
  • May work in varying temperatures; both inside and outside, including inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold, and dampness.
  • May work in areas with exposure to moderate/high noise levels.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including dust.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or from high heights.
